Introduction Stella nova in the Milky Way Dr Flip Schutte Most of our brain’s activities take part in our subconscious. To make the link between your subconscious and your conscious, you need imagination. Imagination is the mysterious gift that can make the link between the two. To imagine means to make an image or a picture in our minds. When this image or picture is captured on canvas it becomes art. Art is an example of imagination at work. But art is more than just imagination, as Janson writes in his History of Art (2004:23): art is an aesthetic object which is meant to be looked at and appreciated for its own sake. In Annelie Hertzog’s art I found aesthetic imagination that I can appreciate. An art dealer once described Annelie’s work as a fusion between Realism, Romanticism and Impressionism. One can see the emotional themes and definite lines of the Realism in her work, but as impressionist she seeks to capture the fleeting effects of light and interpret the poetry of the here and now. She has the state of mind of a romanticist because as Wendy Beckett describes it in her The story of art (1994:236), she has a creative outlook on life with no fixed laws relating to the beauty that she paints. The great Romantic poet, William Wordsworth, said of poetry in the 1790’s that it is “emotion recollected in tranquility.” This also applies according to me to the art and classical favor that Annelie brings into her paintings. She left the flat brush strokes of Realism behind and replaced it with the impressionistic flecks of paint that, together with light on her objects, also typical of Impressionism, plays a big role in her attempt to convey an extraordinary range of visual effects. As artist living in a postmodern world, she is an inhabitant of the global village. With her paintings she deconstructs reality, put the values of modernity hermeneutically under suspicion and she decided to abandon what she discovered. She chose to convey a message that spells out peace, serenity and tranquility. Her choice of colours and subjects must bring happiness and warmth to people’s homes and lives. This is what she stands for, and this is what you’ll experience when one of her paintings touches your life. As a new star in a fast growing industry, I am confident that her light will be with us for decades to come and that your investment in her art will deliver dividends.
